Room Supervisor to lead the unit of children aged 2-3 years
Full time, 4 days per week
Operating hours: 8am-6pm
Welsh speaking: Hugely advantageous, to support the team in building confidence in the language
Purpose of Job:
To work in partnership with the Manager and Deputy Manager to ensure the day-to-day operation of the nursery is kept to high standards, in line with the settings policies and ensure compliance with the Children Acts and associated curriculum for Wales, all relevant Health and Safety legislation and any actions set by CIW. The Unit Supervisor will also support the fulfilling legal and statutory requirements, contributing to and implementing nursery policies, in addition to other duties set by the Manager.
In the absence of the Manager and Deputy Manager, the Supervisor will be required to cover this role.
ACCOUNTABILITIES
CHILDCARE AND EDUCATION
Model, supervise and support all staff in the unit to achieve their role, as observant enabling adults. Having a direct positive impact on the quality of engaging experiences and effective environments.
Plan meaningful experiences that are responsive to children’s developing needs and interests.
Use observations to inform our interactions and guide our planning with the children.
Model and supervise other staff to ensure all staff value, celebrate and build upon children’s past and present experiences from home and in the community, to strengthen a sense of belonging.
Model and supervise other staff to ensure children feel safe and secure within the unit environment, and to show care and emotional support to help build a firm sense of belonging.
As children learn new skills, ensure they have the opportunities to use them in a variety of contexts with each other, adults, on a one-to-one basis or in a small group.
Provide an inclusive environment, both indoors and outdoors, ensuring there are open-ended opportunities to play, explore and investigate.
Being attuned to children’s interests, responses, non-verbal cues, to support positive dispositions to learning, as well as increasing knowledge and skills.
Overseeing that every child within the unit feels connected, secure and safe, to develop strong sense of wellbeing.
Model and support other staff to secure attachments and relationships for children to become confident in themselves, to be better able in making choices, show grater resilience and independence and participate positively in everyday activities.
Oversee and operate a welcoming and authentic environment, in line with the curriculum for Wales, to foster and celebrate the growth, happiness and development of every individual child.
Ensure that the environments in the unit are well set out and that resources are excitingly presented and accessible.
Support staff and finalise the development and maintenance of planning, observation and assessment procedures which take account of children’s individual needs and interests.
Ensure that all children in the unit have an accurate, up to date record of their learning and achievements.
Monitor and oversee the use of mealtimes and other routines to ensure that these are a pleasant, social time where children’s independence is fully promoted. To ensure all staff sit and interact with their key children when possible and they see this as an important element of planning to support learning and development.
Run a calm, smooth unit using staff delegation as appropriate.
Lead and implement positive management of children’s behaviour across the nursery. Provide support and expertise to ensure that all staff are able to manage a full range of behaviours positively.
To provide support and expertise to ensure that all staff understand and are able to act as key person for a group of children.
To structure, review and monitor the effectiveness of key persons.
Support the requirements of children with special needs via specialist programs so that the company’s admission policy may be as inclusive as possible.
Monitor and support effective transition within the nursery to ensure that accurate and detailed information is used to fully support the needs of individuals.
Supervise, effectively mentor and provide a good role model for all Nursery Nurses, assistants and students and help new staff fit in with the team.
Provide the necessary support to enable staff to extend and develop their skills and expertise in line with their current roles.
Use your own observations and reflective practice to assist the Manager and Deputy Managers in producing annual staff / nursery development plan.
Support and guide the development of secure relationships with parents and other appropriate agencies.
To keep up to date with developments in childcare through regular training and reading as appropriate.
Provide support and expertise to enable staff to contribute to effective self evaluation which is used to identify areas for development and ways to improve practice.
Ensure that Health & Safety policies are fully implemented and checks are completed daily within the nursery. In particular ensure the required standards of cleanliness and hygiene are achieved, risk assessments are in place, the environments and equipment are appropriately maintained and that best practice is communicated and promoted throughout the nursery.
DAILY DUTIES
Providing feedback to the Manager and Deputy Managers on issues relating to the nursery day.
Having key responsibility in the absence of the Deputy Manager
To supervise in the daily domestic management of the nursery, including ensuring that the unit is kept safe, secure and clean at all times. Maintaining records and documentation to comply with statutory regulations. Be prepared to help where needed in preparation of snack meals, cleaning of equipment, doing laundry etc.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
To report and record all accidents, incidents and to be aware of all risk assessments within the nursery, maintaining all unit risk assessments and checks are updated regularly, and to ensure all staff read and sign them.
OPERATIONAL
To promote the nursery to potential customers and current parents.
STAFF
The unit supervisor will be responsible for the direct supervision of a unit, also to provide support in relation to the management of room staff.
Maintaining staff ratio’s and deploying staff effectively to carry out the correct preparation in nappy changing, laundry duties and supervision of snacks/ meals etc.
Helping new staff to fit into the nursery and assisting in appraisals.
Provide advice and guidance to students, trainees and others on work placements or work experience in order that they receive the appropriate support.
Encourage staff to reflect on their own practices to identify areas for improvement.
With the nursery Manager and Deputy Manager, identify key concerns and priorities and agree actions.
Participate in the delivery of in-house training if applicable.
Contribute in staff meetings and lead planning sessions.
COMMUNICATION
Always being professional when communicating with families and outside agencies. Being role model to staff training, always showing best practice and reminding staff what not to do, speaking to families professionally and always referring to their child’s full name.
Ensure effective systems are in place to share information about children with parents and other professionals or agencies, as appropriate, to ensure that all children’s needs are always known and fully met.
Effectively and efficiently handle parental complaints, whether childcare or business in nature, seeking advice from the Manager where necessary.

To keep up to date with developments in childcare through regular training as appropriate.

This post requires a DBS check, as there may be periods of unsupervised access to children.
