                                                                      Early years practitioner

  • To deliver and ensure a high standard of learning, development and care for children aged 0-5 years
  • To support the room manager with the daily running of the room
  • To ensure the room and resources are safe and appropriate for children, staff and others
  • To develop partnerships with parents/carers to increase involvement in their child’s development

To take on the role of being a key person, observing, assessing and planning for each individual child

Duties

  • To have a sound knowledge of company policies, procedures, and expectations
  • To act as an excellent role model to the staff team and children.
  • To take responsibility for excellent hygiene, health and safety and security practice within the nursery
  • To play a part in planning and providing appropriate daily activities in line with guidance from the EYFS for your key children
  • To uphold the highest level of safeguarding practice and ensure company policies and procedures are always adhered to
  • To carry out observation, assessment and planning in your room, with your key children, ensuring all children are making progress
  • To work with outside professionals where required
  • To work closely with parents and create trusting relationships with all families

To work as part of the team within your room and within the wider setting

qualifications, experiences and skills

Essential

• Minimum level 2 in early years or equivalent

• Excellent verbal communication skills with staff, children and parents

• Good standard of English and Maths at GCSE A-C or equivalent

• Experience of working in a nursery or similar environment

• Experience of working in a team

• Calm and caring nature

• Reliable, enthusiastic, flexible

Desirable 

• Experience of being a key person

• Some knowledge of the Early Years Foundation stage 

• Paediatric first aid

• Safeguarding training

• Food hygiene

• Current DBS on update service

• Basic Administrative and IT skills

Early years Room Leader

  • To lead the room in delivering consistently high-quality education, care and outcomes for children in line with the EYFS
  • To take full responsibility for the quality of teaching, learning and care within the room
  • To ensure all children make strong and measurable progress from their starting points
  • To lead, develop and hold the team accountable for high standards of practice

Duties

Quality of Education

  • To ensure all planning is purposeful, sequenced and based on children’s interests and next steps
  • To ensure every child has clearly identified next steps that are implemented daily
  • To monitor the quality and impact of observations and assessments
  • To ensure all observations clearly demonstrate learning and progress
  • To identify children not making expected progress and take immediate action
  • To ensure gaps in learning are closed quickly and effectively
  • To embed the Characteristics of Effective Learning across provision

Behaviour & Attitudes

  • To set and maintain high expectations for behaviour
  • To ensure consistent behaviour management across the team
  • To support children to regulate emotions effectively
  • To ensure the environment promotes engagement and minimises disruption

Personal Development

  • To ensure children develop independence and resilience
  • To embed inclusive practice and meet individual needs
  • To provide meaningful opportunities to build cultural capital
  • To promote British Values in a meaningful and age-appropriate way

Leadership & Team Management

  • To lead the room team with clear direction and high expectations
  • To delegate responsibilities and monitor completion
  • To ensure staff understand and deliver their roles effectively
  • To address underperformance promptly and escalate where required
  • To ensure clear communication with management at all times
  • To complete weekly room evaluations identifying strengths and actions

Safeguarding & Welfare

  • To ensure safeguarding is prioritised at all times
  • To maintain full compliance with statutory requirements
  • To ensure all records are accurate, complete and timely
  • To act immediately on any safeguarding concerns

Compliance & Environment

  • To ensure the room is consistently safe, organised and well-resourced
  • To ensure all documentation is inspection-ready at all times

To ensure learning environments reflect children’s current development

qualifications, experiences and skills

Essential

  • Level 3 Early Years qualification
  • Strong and secure knowledge of EYFS and child development
  • Proven ability to lead or influence a team
  • Experience improving outcomes for children
  • Strong organisational and leadership skills

Desirable

  • Previous Room Leader experience
  • Paediatric First Aid
  • Safeguarding and child protection training

Experience supporting SEND
